Hippie Book

My book on the hippies is almost ready to publish.

This unique book represents over ten years of research on both personal and professional levels.  I have been able to identify and combine the best aspects of the hippie way of life.  I did this work while a full professor of sociology at North Carolina State University.  This builds on the fact that I was proud to be a hippie between 1966 and 1974Then became a student for a dozen years.  Most values, beliefs, and lifestyle preferences I learned as a hippie have stuck with me throughout life.   I have again managed to think and act like a hippie for almost a decade.    This book provides deep insights into what it was to be a hippie in the sixties; as well as how relevant this lifestyle and philosophy are for today.  Look at the Occupy Movement and you will see “new-age hippies” who will fulfill the dreams from their parents generation.

I am confident that the following book proposal will be discovered by a literary agent; and/or accepted by a book publisher This will happen soon so my book will be ready for the “Hot and Hip Summer of 2012.”  By the way – Hippies will Occupy Charlotte for the Democratic convention (shades of 1968 in Chicago.)  We should listen to Jimi Hendrix when he sang “You better hope that love is the answer… You better hope it comes before the summer.”  By reading this book you will learn what it means to be a hippie.  You will “Get High, Hip and Happy” with Dr. Tom Hoban (with inspiration from many great authors, musicians and spiritual guides!)

WHY THE HIPPIES MATTER

A unique set of factors came together during the 1960s to nurture a modern renaissance.  Many changes took place simultaneously, thanks to the efforts of the civil rights, anti-war, and women’s movements.  These social movements have been widely studied and celebrated over the last 40 years.  On the other hand, the legacies and impacts of the sixties youth counterculture (i.e., the hippies) have rarely been studied.  For most boomers, these wilder days are best forgotten.  In fact, people on the right actively  engage in “hippie bashing.”  If boomers are honest many will admit they were happier when they were younger (whether or not they were hippies.).   It is time to resurrect the good times and live like the hippies intended!!

The term “hippies” referred to (mostly young) people who wanted freedom to do their own thing.  Demographically, the majority of sixties hippies were white college kids, from higher income families (like today’s Occupy movement.)  They questioned authority, protested the Vietnam War and wanted to get back to the land. Hippie legacies are profound and are need to be rediscovered to bring coherence to the Occupy movement.  Hippie impacts on American society and global culture are apparent through legacies of environmentalism, consumer activism, and natural foods.  Hippie music, fashion, and slogans endure today and are consistently popular among young people. The hippie lifestyle and mindset is reflected in New Age spiritual practices and other beliefs that have permeated our culture over the past 50 years.

The sixties’ counterculture led to many important innovations that we now take for granted.  As I noted with his passing Steve Jobs would never have flourished without the hippies.  Hippies started the information revolution.  The developing counterculture emerged in what is now called “Silicon Valley.”   Jerry Garcia and Pigpen met at a music store in Palo Alto, Cal (home of Steve Jobs and Stanford University.) Part of their ethic was to “rip off the man” by using the latest technology.  Steve Jobs’ driving vision was for a personal (i.e., cheap and easy) computer for everyone – in part to counter control by mainframe computers. Anarchist hackers wanted to makes sure computers would become tools of liberation rather than repression.

The hippie counterculture also revived earlier utopian visions and Native American spirituality that they carried out through experiments in alternative lifestyles (such as communes and anarchy). Hippies felt a sense of continuity and connection with the past and other cultures. Their vision and values of environmentalism, nonviolence, and equality appeal to many people  who would not identify themselves as part of a counterculture.  They are referred to as “cultural creatives” or “new age enthusiasts.”) Research shows that millions of people now live by and agree with hippies’ fundamental beliefs and values. Younger people are particularly likely to find these ideals and lifestyles to be empowering and enjoyable.

WHY THIS BOOK NOW

Hippies realized that the only way to achieve lasting happiness is through renewed commitment to core human values (like making the world a better place.)  Hippies realized they were responsible for making themselves happier.  They did this by learning, laughing and loving as much as they could.  Hippies discovered that people don’t need to buy anything else or add to their “to-do” lists to become happier.  They tried to take charge of their own physical, social, and spiritual well-being.  They were among the first to realize that free people could not rely on government, religions or corporations to deliver services, salvation, and satisfaction.

Hippie music, fashion, and slogans endure and are continue to be popular with each new generation of globalized hippies.   The hippie lifestyle and mindset are reflected in the steady increase (for almost half a century) in awareness and adoption of:  yoga, organic food, environmental sustainability and other innovations that have permeated the global culture.

This book provides proven and practical strategies for promoting positive personal change and societal transformation.  The Internet now provides individuals and communities with more power over their own destinies than ever before.  Thanks to the Occupy movement, hip people are organizing at the grass roots level to secure justice and happiness for the greatest number of people.

MODELING THE HIPPIE LIFESTYLE

My own personal and professional journey over the past 40 years provides a model for the kinds of life transformations anyone can achieve.  The book provide practical lessons learned along the way as a social scientist, journalist and community organizer.   I have developed a complete and practical model to show how happiness can be achieved by learning and living the lessons of the hippie counterculture.

I have developed an easily-understood model of the hippie way of life.  I call the seven integrated attitudes and behaviors: “The Seven Habits of Highly Happy Hippies.”  This title builds on Dr. Timothy Leary’s sloganTurn On, Tune In, Drop Out, as well as Dr. Stephen Covey’s international best-seller “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.”   For each of these seven habits, the book provides information about why the habit was and is important in order to become high, hip, and happy.   The book provides sound strategies and practical ideas for living each habit.  The main question remaining is “Are You on the Bus or Not!?”

This model includes seven profiles of legendary “hippie leaders” who personified each of the following habits.   Each profiles includes insights into how each sixties visionary lived the particular habit (i.e., serves as a role model.)  Each includes key quotes by (and about) the individual.  The companion website includes an annotated listing of key books, videos and websites.  These tie directly to my popular web tributes to each of the heroes.  These habits and heroes confirm the power of personal transformation and engaged activism to save our world.

SOME DEFINITIONS

This book’s title (“Get High, Get Hip, Get Happy”) is based on advice from Dr. Timothy Leary in the mid-sixties to “Turn On, Tune In and Drop.”  We can no longer drop out of this situation.  The book’s model explores the relationship between three concepts that are vital to appreciating and practicing the hippie lifestyle.

Get High means to elevate your consciousness — to get in touch with a higher plane of reality and tap into sources of energy we all possess.  For over 7000 years humans have used a wide range of natural and artificial methods to achieve this higher state. This can be achieved through practices such as meditation and dancing; as well as a variety of “psychedelic” substances (e.g., marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, LSD and some recent creations.)  Note that this definition does not include: getting drunk, taking downers (e.g., opium, vicadin, heroin), or taking uppers (speed and cocaine).

Get Hip means increasing our awareness of our own individual power; as well as the strength we have in numbers.  It also means we know how to interact within and work to change the establishment system.  Being hip is like a class consciousness – we are all in this together.  We need to get hip to our own inner energies and learn to work this amazing body and mind.  We also become hip when we see through the lies and nonsense thrown at us through conventional media, religion and schools.  We also realize that others are here to help us on our journeys.

Get Happy means really enjoying what you have and looking on the world with an optimistic and hopeful frame of mind.  Research shows people need to have freedom and dignity.  We know that our thoughts create our realities (so be careful what you think about).  Second, we must get in the habit of being grateful and giving praise for whomever or whatever makes us happy.  In particular we need to appreciate other people more.  Third, people are not happy when in a rut or routine.  We must have genuine and accessible outlets for our innate creativity.  We are happier when we can dance, sing, paint, or in general let the juices flow.  Finally, we need to feel that our lives have purpose.  As they say, the joy is in the giving.

THIS BOOK STANDS OUT

This book will not be pigeon-holed, as it crosses a wide range of genre (e.g., self-help, current affairs, US history, biography, rock music, marijuana, sustainable living, and more.)  This book is also the rare blend of seamless scholarly rigor and common sense entertainment.

This book has a number of features that make it unique from other books.  This work is based on long-term, interdisciplinary scholarship woven together with compelling personal narrative.

Having reviewed the majority of books about “The Sixties,” it is clear that none pay significant attention to the hippies.  Good books related to sixties history and social change include the following.

  • Anderson, Terry H. 1996. The Movement and the Sixties. Oxford University Press, USA.
  • Braunstein, P., and Michael William Doyle. 2001. Imagine Nation: The American Counterculture of the 1960’s and 70’s. Routledge.
  • Gitlin, Todd. 1993. The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage. Bantam.
  • Kurlansky, Mark. 2005. 1968: The Year that Rocked the World. Random House Trade Paperbacks.

Books that focus on hippies tend to be personal memoirs and/or interviews with hippie icons.  No other books lay out a conceptual model and practical strategies like this book does.  The majority of books about hippies are at least 20 years old and out-of-print. I have obtained copies of most of these rare books.  The following recent books serve as reference or coffee table books (reflecting the notion that this is a tribe from a long-ago era.)

  • McCleary, John Bassett. 2004. The Hippie Dictionary: A Cultural Encyclopedia (and Phraseicon) of the 1960s and 1970s. Ten Speed Press.
  • Miles, Barry. 2005. Hippie. Sterling.

So far I have reviewed over 100 related and competing books (annotated bibliography will be included on companion website.)  These fall into several broad categories:  music profiles, happiness handbook, sixties retrospectives; communal experience; drug legalization (especially marijuana,) and progressive political commentary.

TARGET AUDIENCES

This book should appeal to anyone who wants to understand the legacies and live the lessons of the hippies.  The primary audience will be baby boomers and their children (from the Millennial Generation.)  People who want help dealing with social change and personal life transitions will it here.   My major market are the increasingly educated and engaged people who are taking responsibility for their lives.  Research suggests a very large potential market and social movement (e.g., 50,000,000 “Cultural Creatives.”)   This book will also prove useful for social activist, academics, politicians, and marketers.  This book will enlighten and entertain readers seeking wisdom and wit to guide them through uncertain times.

The 2008 campaign and election of Barack Obama initially revived the sense of social movements that we saw during the sixties.  Now we witness the creative and growing “Occupy Movement” which I have written about extensively.  Occupy activists and the media are interested in the lessons and legacies of the hippies.   Hippie values and attitudes formed the foundation for the Occupy movement directly; as well as indirectly through the growing interests in alternative lifestyles, holistic health, social justice, and empowering spirituality.

AUTHOR’S PLATFORM

I have over 30 years of innovative and innovation education and experience (CLICK here for full academic vita.)   Through my career I have been able to create an authentic identity that enables me to talk the “talk and walk the walk.”   This book shows how my life embodies the ideas presented in the book.   My progressive social activism was reborn at the turn of century (an grew to outrage during the Bush years.)  I had the good fortune to take a number of international trips – which fired my sociological imagination (seeing the US as an outsider.)  My mission became to entertain, educate, empower, enlighten, and engage people so they can take back control of their lives and our society.  My Internet platforms enable me to connect with a wide range of people from a position of trust and authority.

My research and teaching have enabled me to be among the leaders in my generation to understand and bridge the growing gap between baby boomers and their children. My recent research examined the digital divide between the generations.   I was one of the first people over 30 to jump into the turbulent waters of the Internet – when I joined MySpace in 2003.  I began using on-line networking sites almost ten years ago and began monitoring how young people used these emerging tools.  About ten years ago I developed my own peer-reviewed website aimed at documenting the lessons and legacy of the hippie counterculture.  This book builds squarely on this foundation.

In early 2008, I created this progressive blog (The HipHappy Times) to:

  • Pay tribute to my musical and social heroes (e.g., Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and others)
  • Document the ongoing process of social change from the Obama campaign through the Occupy Movement.
  • Support and promote causes I care about (e.g., legalizing marijuana and environmental protection.)

Throughout my academic career, I was a social marketing and public policy adviser to government, industry and nonprofit organizations.  I have worked extensively with the media since receiving my MS in Journalism in from UW-Madison (1982 )   I am an accomplished and entertaining public speaker – having given over 500 invited presentations at a wide range of scientific conferences, universities and industry conventions.

MARKETING AND PROMOTION

I have a comprehensive plan to actively create buzz about and promote the book.  I clearly understand and see the value of cross-promotion and the importance of word-of-mouth marketing.  As discussed above the potential audience is huge and the timing is perfect.  Marketing as related to the book’s innovative and practical design will be discussed in the next section.  The overall product positioning could be similar to the genre of paper-back “dummies” handbooks in quality and price (hopefully under $20.00.)  This book will be laid out to be easy and fun to read, respond and refer to repeatedly.

I plan to retain a speakers’ bureau and/or Internet talent agency.  There are a variety of groups and organizations that should be interested in having me speak to them. This book and my extensive experience give me the credentials to speak on this book and many current topics in front of live audiences (as I have done over 500 times.)  I am ready, willing and able to comment on any aspect of the hippie counterculture;  as well as a host of critical current topics.  I will continue expanding my Internet platforms and plan to work as a special commentator on MSNBC, Comedy Central or any other appropriate venues.

I also will seek endorsements for the book from some key cultural icons (e.g., Wavy Gravy, Bill Maher, Bob Weir, and others.)  Other potential testimonials will be solicited from academic researchers, social commentators, and social activists.  I will be able to take full advantage of any media appearances.  I understand media, marketing, and positioning very well.  I also know that the time is ripe and right for this message and my innovative approaches.  I will explore joint appearances and cross promotions with musicians and activist organizations

For the past ten years, I have created and developed the HipHappy brand that has great potential for a host of ancillary products and services.  I already have several websites up-and-running that provide additional information, useful links, and background material.  I will use the latest Web 2.0 tools for updating content.  I will identify a variety of key opinion leaders to reach and target their interests.  In addition, I will solicit reviews from a number of consumer and trade media – both online and in print.  I also intend to explore serialization potential online and in print magazines.

DESIGN FEATURES

Given my background in journalism, web design and communication strategy I will be able to incorporate a number of effective design elements in this book.  I understand that most people have relatively short attention spans so will organize the content into manageable modules (that a person could read in under 20 minutes). Most pages will include interesting “bits of information” drawn from: social science research and public opinion polls; song lyrics; book, video and music suggestions; selected web-links; and other effective literary devices.

There will be a number of distinctive and innovative features of the book that exemplify a state-of-the art combination of education, entertainment, and enlightenment.  The emphasis will be on engaged and self-paced learning activities that will allow the reader to fully grasp and adopt new beliefs, attitudes and behaviors. Each main chapter will incorporate worksheets and surveys; action items and things to do; and questions for reflection and discussion.  Appendices and website enhancements will include: resource links, search and contact strategies; glossary of terms; annotated bibliography; and chapter summaries.  I anticipate an attractive layout with photos, art work, graphs, boxed quotes, bullet lists, and adequate white space.

The companion website will serve as a convenient and credible resource center and social community that will incorporate the following tools:  discussion guides and surveys; reviews and recommendations (books, movies, music and more); chat-rooms and forums, links to business partners; social networking community; and video archives.  The site will encourage readers to leave comments, questions, ideas and insights (e.g., examples of how the book has impacted readers’ lives.)  Success stories will be shared about what works for individuals, communities, and organizations. My database with over 400 quotes about happiness will enable a quote-a-day feature on the website and through daily e-mails.
