Jesus was a Community Organizer – Pontius Pilate was a Governor!!

During the Republicans’ wretched convention they launched a foolish attack against Barack Obama’s experience as a community organizer.  Response to these ignorant tirades has included reactions from those who have worked their whole lives to help the less advantaged – namely community organizers.  Why would the Republicans spend a whole night of their convention attacking ordinary people?  With the nation watching, the Republicans mocked, dismissed, and actually laughed out loud at Americans who engage in community service and organizing.

During my Ph.D. program in Rural Sociology I studied community development (organization).  During the past two decades I have worked with groups of farmers, citizens and others to organize their efforts to make improvements in environmental quality, economic development, and social justice.  These are clearly the types of efforts we need to give a higher priority if we really want to improve our nation and the world.  In this article I document the reaction to this attack on community organizers and explain the kinds of important work that they do.  It will also be clear why Barack’s experience as a community organizer will be the key to  success his of his GRASS ROOTS campaignin November.

Bobby Kennedy Would Back Barack Obama

The nation recently noted the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy as he was ramping up his run for the democratic primary as presidential hopeful. We have been hearing how Barack Obama has many of the same messages and mannerisms of the Bobby Kennedy. In this article I will highlight some of the key ways in which Bobby Kennedy is reincarnated in the first term senator from Illinois. I will include many quotes and pix from Bobby.  I trust you will see many similarities between Bobby and Barack. Continue reading

Dr. King’s Legacy Requires Activism Not Pacifism

Today, April 4, 2008 is the 40th Anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s a day to reflect on King’s largely unfinished work for justice and equality. I want to speculate about what King would say and do about today’s issues had he not been assassinated in 1968. King would still be fighting against racism, poverty and war. In particular, he would be leading the criticism of the United States – not just for our involvement in Iraq but for the whole way in which corporations have taken over the global economy. Hippies Had the Best Ideas

It is now popular to look back to the sixties for inspiration and insight into how to change society for the better.  Candidates are trying to capture the charisma of JFK and other leaders.  However, most baby boomers are quick to distance themselves from the hippie counterculture.  This social movement is more relevant for our young people than their parents want to admit.   Young people see their parents and others as  hypocrites for abandoning the hippie agenda for a better world. Bumper Sticker Philosophy

Sometimes the most important wisdom is the shortest and simplest. I have the back of my 1995 Jeep Cherokee covered with bumper stickers. Cool to watch people behind me smile and even discuss what I have on the back. So I went online and collected about 30 pages worth in a word document. Have kept the choicest nuggets for your entertainment, education, and your enlightenment. Continue reading

Marley’s Prophecy and Our Future

This is one of the many BLOGs I have written about Reggae music over the last few years on MySpace. Here is one of the more politically oriented messages that Bob Marley and the Wailers taught us – which are now being carried forward with honor by Bob’s sons and others. Continue reading
