States Scramble as Marijuana Becomes Biggest Cash Crop

One in four states allow the use of medical marijuana for patients with a doctor’s approval.  All the federal government needs to do is to call off the unethical and ineffective war against these states.  I have written that Obama will end the failed federal war on marijuana One stroke of the presidential pen will legalize it; and the pent-up demand will be overwhelming. Read more about how and why we can enjoy medical marijuana – whether or not the federal government allows us.

Recent reports show that marijuana has been the largest US cash crop for years.  This growth is concentrated in several regions (west coast and former tobacco states.)  States that now lead production will have an early advantage as the war ends.  Given how much money is tied up in pot production and distribution, the stakes are truly high.  Think of how much public benefit will occur if we had the tax revenues from legal production and consumption of pot.  The leading conservative voice, William F. Buckley strongly supported legalization of marijuana. Real jobs, wealth and happiness will be created in the process!!

My Research Shows that Food Creates Both Comfort and Confusion

Dr Tom at Chicago Water TowerIn this column I present myself as a lifelong scholar of and advocate of farming and food. My graduate research during the 1980s focused on ways to encourage farmers to take better care of their soil and water resources. My professor job at NC State University focused on the social and environmental impacts of farming and food production. You can read all about that in the first part.  Then read a new column I just wrote that ties together food, spirituality and the hippies.  I also include some cool pix and quotes. In addition, read the review I wrote of the fine film “The Future of Food,” by Deborah Koons-Garcia.

To start with I invite you to read how my views on the subject of food biotechnology (a.k.a., GMOs) has changed over the past decade. These changes in attitudes about my profession ran along with some major transformations I have also made in my personal, political, and philosophical lives!!  I have spent over 30 years studying and working to change the food production and distribution system to become more sustainable and successful.  Americans do enjoy an unbelievably cheap and abundant food supply – that has been under serious threat since the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s and Chemical Revolution of the 1950’s.

Cats Are Creative, Cool and Compassionate

Spring is the best time to pay tribute to my true friends through thick and thin – my cats. Just as people feel passionately about their kids, dogs and other companions, many of us also love our cats. They are smarter and cleaner than dogs. They can be alone for extended periods – but cats do not like to be alone. Above all they model the peaceful, Zen lifestyle that I and many others are trying to achieve. Read this post to understand the many benefits of cat ownership. This features many of the best quotes ever on our furry friends. Also, learn why cats make the perfect therapy animals for the elderly, young people and anyone who would prefer minimal responsibility for maximum cat-love. Continue reading

How and Why You Can Grow Medical Marijuana

In this post I am continuing to inform and inspire people about how to practice civil disobedience by ignoring the unjust marijuana laws. BTW, these clearly are the most popular posts on my BLOG. The good news is with the Internet and new grow light technologies anyone can raise their own “victory gardens.” First, is a story about how almost all major medical associations are calling for an end to the war on weed. Second, I describe the new LED grow lights that remove almost any chance of being caught. Third, I provide you with a verified list of sites where you can buy all that you need to grow your own. You can order the LED grow lights, hydroponic equipment and amazing seeds online. It is even possible to order marijuana and hashish direct from Amsterdam. Fourth, I provide more insight into why our use of marijuana for spiritual enlightenment should be protected under our freedom of religion. Please leave some comments!! Continue reading

Getting Back In Touch with Earth

This article builds on my life-long connection to the land. I grew up in the country among farms and spent much of my professional life helping farmers deal with new technologies and public policies. Personally and professionally I have been an environmentalist for almost 40 years. Over that same time I have studied and learned from the native Americans who hold the land in high esteem. Through this I hope to once again to revive the hippie ideal and ideas about living on the land. Continue reading

FDA Sends in the Clones!!

Over ten years ago I was advising the USDA, dairy industry, and others that public concerns over meat and milk from cloned animals would be huge. The Bush-league FDA has cleared the last hurdle to mix the mutant materials into our food supply. Read my Op-ed about why consumers will not and should not accept the products. Continue reading
