Activism – Occupy

Here are the articles I wrote directly about the Occupy movement, as well as some of my earlier articles that are directly related to the important topics being raised. Note by the dates how far ahead I was on some issues.

Ted Rall’s Anti-American Manifesto Speaks Compelling Truth to Power

Ted Rall is among the most competent and confident voices in the new progressive movement emerging in America.  As a noted author and editorial cartoonist he produces smart and strident sarcasm aimed at waking people up.  His most recent book – entitled The Anti-American Manifesto – contains the rationale and strategy for taking back control of our country from the corporate-government regime that threatens to destroy our country and the world.  As more people experience relative deprivation they will become angrier and ready for revolution.

Ted Rall outlines the challenges and opportunities that progressives face as they try to change the corrupt and decaying capitalist system.  This BLOG post contains reviews and excerpts from this excellent book – along with interviews Ted has recently conducted .  You will also find two his most relevant syndicated columns.  I also have included some of his cool and creative cartoons – many more of each can be found on his website.   Click below to be enlightened, entertained and enraged!!

Get Involved to Recreate “Spirit of 1968”

For over 20 years I have researched and written about the need for and mechanisms of social change. The Democratic National Convention in Denver brings back various visions and views of the 1968 convention in Chicago.  For perspective, I was 16 and living an hour from downtown Chicago when things started happening.  Several friends and I were stopped on the expressway from entering the downtown area.  We went home and missed the action.  I am also going to miss this years conventions because I have no funds and must do my thing here in North Carolina.

I have written earlier about the massive social movement that Obama has catalyzed. This article brings you the latest in plans, politics and philosophy from the social activists .  I urge anyone who is close by to join the cause of taking back our country.  Denver (and Minneapolis next week) are both among our most tolerant and progressive cities – visited each a few times.   Also read about Denver’s lax laws on smoking marijuana.  It is our country and we must make sure that Obama-Biden fulfill our needs and their promises!!  The whole world will truly be watching – just as they were in 1968.

Bobby Kennedy Would Back Barack Obama

The nation recently noted the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy as he was ramping up his run for the democratic primary as presidential hopeful. We have been hearing how Barack Obama has many of the same messages and mannerisms of the Bobby Kennedy. In this article I will highlight some of the key ways in which Bobby Kennedy is reincarnated in the first term senator from Illinois. I will include many quotes and pix from Bobby.  I trust you will see many similarities between Bobby and Barack. Continue reading

Dr. King’s Legacy Requires Activism Not Pacifism

Today, April 4, 2008 is the 40th Anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s a day to reflect on King’s largely unfinished work for justice and equality. I want to speculate about what King would say and do about today’s issues had he not been assassinated in 1968. King would still be fighting against racism, poverty and war. In particular, he would be leading the criticism of the United States – not just for our involvement in Iraq but for the whole way in which corporations have taken over the global economy. Freedom is Our Power, So Use it or Lose It

American society is at a historical crossroads. We now have the chance to rebuild our lives and communities; but only if we are left free from excessive corporate and federal government meddling. It is clear that the Bush administration has tried aggressively to take away our freedoms and control our behaviors. However, as Bob Marley it is time to “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.” In this post I give you some well-tested strategies for regaining our personal and collective freedom. As always, I hope you enjoy the pix and cool quotes!! Continue reading

Obama Movement has Massive Momentum

The Obama political campaign clearly qualifies as a social movement that is larger than the sum of its parts. After the past week’s landslide victories in eight states by double-digit margins, it is clear to me and others that Barack Obama will be the Democratic candidate and ultimately president of the United States. Obama has brought many new people – especially youth – into the political process. At the same time, the lemmings are leaping off the sinking Clinton ship and the wheels are falling of McCain’s straight-talk express. In this post I will outline my assessment of this amazing moment in history as a sociologist with 25 years experience analyzing and promoting progressive social change. Continue reading
